JOSEPH DECOSIMO BILLY BUTTON
North Carolina singer-songwriter Joseph Decosimo channels the spirit of traditional Appalachian folk on his new single ‘Billy Button’. The track is the second preview of his forthcoming album Fiery Gizzard, and a testament to the work that he has put into understanding folk as an art form by learning from older folk artists and teaching others with an interest in the music. ‘Billy Button’ is a gently homespun rendition of the tune that Decosimo heard from his friend and collaborator Jake Xeres Fussell. Decosimo forged his own connection with the song when he found himself singing it to his newborn son, explaining that he was “…immediately captivated by the melody, trippy imagery, and tongue twister refrain.” Decosimo’s rendition is beautifully articulated through the mindful, warm pluck of his banjo and a softened fiddle motif that aligns seamlessly with his smooth, rich vocal tone and carefully enunciated approach. These elements bring out a subtle magic in ‘Billy Button’, honouring the lineage of the track while tapping into the nursery rhyme surrealism that Decosimo finds himself fascinated with. While the track speaks to his appreciation for tradition, it also highlights his ability to recognise ways in which new life can be brought to classic forms. -Kayla Sandiford
